ReCenter Indiana invites community to be heard at listening sessions, as political pressure to redistrict escalates
ReCenter Indiana, Inc. is inviting Hoosiers to take part in a series of nonpartisan listening sessions this fall, designed to elevate citizen voices and provide critical information about the proposed mid-decade congressional redistricting.
The sessions will be on three consecutive Thursday evenings – in Martinsville, Beech Grove and Fishers.
Explaining what mid-decade redistricting would mean for Indiana voters will be Laura Merrifield Wilson, associate professor of political science at the University of Indianapolis.
Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions and share their concerns about the issues that matter most to them and their communities.
ReCenter Indiana, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization reminding all elected officials to center on the priorities of the people, will record each event to help inform policymakers of everyday Hoosiers’ perspectives.
Congressional redistricting normally occurs once every ten years, following the census. The current maps were drawn in 2021 by the Republican-led Indiana General Assembly. But now, Republican legislators are under White House pressure to redraw the map again.
On Friday, Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to visit to Indiana for the second time since August, apparently to hold reticent GOP lawmakers’ feet to the fire.
The goal would be to reshuffle two of Indiana’s nine congressional districts – the only two represented by Democrats – so that Republicans can win them in the 2026 midterm elections.
