When Redistricting Failed, Indiana Won

Local and national conservative commentators are saluting 21 Republican state senators here in Indiana. Those lawmakers recently rejected the national push to stack the deck in next year's congressional elections.

"They told their voters -- loud and clear -- that their first loyalty is to the people who elected them, not to any political influencer or national campaign," says David Snyder at The Hill, a major U.S. news source covering Congress.

A majority of Indiana state senators responded to a public protest against off-cycle redistricting that was "organic, sustained, and statewide," says Abdul Hakim-Shabazz in his Indy Politics blog. "Moderate Republicans and non-crazy conservatives—yes, they still exist—are being reminded why primaries and civic engagement actually matter. Sit them out, and the loudest voices win by default. Show up, organize, and vote, and the temperature of the party changes."

In the end, off-cycle redistricting was defeated in deep red Indiana because 21 state senators stood with their constituents instead of kneeling to political pressure. Their resolve was strengthened by thousands of Hoosiers who spoke up, showed up, and made their voices heard. When constituents across Indiana said “No to Redistricting,” state senators could confidently say no as well.

When elected officials center on Hoosiers’ priorities, Indiana is better.
When Hoosiers are civically engaged and use their voice, Indiana is better.
