Beckwith pushes for more funding for faith-based initiatives amid budget cuts

Indiana's next budget may make cuts to life-saving services. Even so, Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith -- who also presides over the state Senate -- is asking lawmakers to double the spending for his office. Why? To pour more tax dollars into the faith-based initiatives that he supervises. Calling his proposal "a match made in heaven," Beckwith -- who is also a pastor -- accuses current state programs of, for instance, neglecting "the root issue of mental health problems," as IndyStar* puts it.

* Separately, Star opinion editor James Briggs urges "normal people" to get involved in politics. Because, he says: "The state of politics in Indiana is sad and pathetic.

Insiders have incentive to keep it that way ... . The system is working for them."
